Coalition receives $75,000 grant from GAR Foundation for iTowpath

Akron Zoo Connection

The Distribution Committee of GAR Foundation awarded Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition $75,000 at its February meeting to fund iTowpath, a project aiming to better connect, activate, and enhance the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail in Akron from the Mustill Store to Summit Lake.

The Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition began work on iTowpath in 2015 with the support of the John S. & James L. Knight Foundation after realizing that while complete through Akron, the Towpath Trail could still be improved. The award from GAR will compliment funding from Knight Foundation, allowing work to continue on wayfinding, aesthetic improvements to underpasses, community connections to various attractions, and more.

“We are extremely grateful to GAR Foundation for their funding of iTowpath,” said Dan Rice, president and CEO of the Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition. “This funding enables us to activate the Towpath Trail with artwork, lighting, and archways for the 2.5 million hikers and bicyclists utilizing the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail.”
