About our Captain

Nick Browning has been President/CEO of FirstMerit Bank’s Akron Region since November, 2003 and has been with FirstMerit since 1992. In this role, Nick is responsible for coordinating the activities of Retail, Wealth and Commercial Banking for the Akron Region, and has direct responsibility for all aspects of Akron Commercial Banking. In addition, he is a member of the FirstMerit Bank, N.A. Board of Directors and Executive Committee. Prior to joining FirstMerit, Nick was with Ameritrust Bank and NCNB, where he began his banking career in 1987.

Nick holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics and Marketing from the University of South Carolina and an MBA from Kent State University. Current and recent community involvement includes: Greater Akron Chamber Trustee; Leadership Akron Trustee; Summa Health System Trustee; Akron Community Foundation Trustee; Sisler McFawn Foundation Trustee; Summit Education Initiative Trustee and Board President, Downtown Akron Partnership Trustee, past Board President, United Disability Services, as well as Greenleaf Family Center.

The FirstMerit Towpath Century Ride offers participants a unique experience to see the entire length of the Ohio & Erie Canalway National Heritage Area, while raising money to benefit the continued development of the Towpath Trail. Bicyclists travel 101-miles in either one or two days in a fully supported ride. The first Towpath Century Ride, held in 2009, supported only 17 riders who raised $22,000 for the Towpath Trail. Growing quickly over the past seven years, 117 riders participated in 2015, raising more than $143,000 for the cause.

Steve Mobley, owner of Buckeye Brine, an oil field disposal company, recently gave a donation of $15,000, to the Zeisberger Trail and Parks Group. Andy Allensworth, a Chemist for the company, attended a ZTAP meeting on Wednesday evening, to make the contribution official.

“He is someone who wants to give to the community,” said Allensworth, of Mobley. “He’s a generous person and felt that this is a great cause.”

Buckeye Brine is in its second year of operation in the village of Tuscarawas and is located off of US Rt 36.

Krocker said he met Mobley at a Village Council meeting and they immediately hit it off. “We’ve been talking for a couple of years now,” Krocker added. “He’s seen what we’ve accomplished with the money we’ve raised through our various fundraisers and felt we put it to good use. The donation will now enable us to continue with work on our trail and add amenities to the park that is near the boat ramp,” Krocker explained.
